Neutering:
All pets should be neutered. There are not enough homes for the
cats and dogs that are born. Neutering is also likely to give you
a more content animal, less likely to roam. If you are feeding a
stray, please catch, neuter and release them. There are local
organizations that can assist you to do this. You will be
preventing countless homeless animals that would struggle with
starvation and disease. Your caring and taking action does make a
big difference!
Disease prevention: It is
helpful to keep vaccinations current. Many devastating illnesses
can be prevented by regular vaccinations. Keep stray animals away
from your pets to prevent the spread of disease and illness. Wash
your hands with anti-bacterial soap after handling stray animals.
Dental hygiene: If teeth are
not cleaned, tarter builds up and bacteria can collect around
gums. The bacteria produces toxins that can cause other problems
and diseases.
New
pets meet old pets: If you are introducing a new pet into your
home, it is important to communicate what is happening with your
current pets. In fact, it is often very helpful to bring your
pet(s) to help you pick out a new pet. Animals are very perceptive
and recognize when changes are in the works. If they get
communication about what is going on, they are often more easily
able to transition, particularly when you include them in a
situation that is life altering for them too.
Skiddish dogs: If your pet
is skiddish with strangers coming to your home, you can encourage
more sociable behavior by putting your pet on a leash, and leaving
treats by the door. When the door opens, invite your guest to give
your dog a treat. Talk to your dog gently, and give praise when
they do not try to run away. Walking your dog with other dogs can
be helpful too. Dogs learn from each other and can see another dog
enjoy attention from strangers, and learn that behavior.
House training puppies: Take
your puppy out frequently, especially after sleeping, eating or
play time. Accompany your pet outside and reward with praise or
treats immediately after relieving himself. Feed your pet at
regular intervals to help establish a regular schedule. Do not
expect instant results. It could take being up to 8 months of age
before your dog is reliably house trained. Keep your pet contained
to specific areas for better monitoring. Do not punish your pet
with physical discipline. It often creates other quirky behavior.
Be patient and consistent with house training.
Natural Remedies: There are
numerous herbs, vitamins and minerals that can be very helpful
with your pets ability to prevent illness and assist in the body's
ability to recover to normal health. Some of those items are
multi-vitamins, Niacin, Glucosamine, Coenzyme Q10, Echinacea,
Goldenseal, St. John's Wort, Garlic and Aloe Vera. Do not use any
alternative medicines without seeking the advice of a
Veterinarian.
Being kind and loving is truly the
best way to get along with others, whether they have two legs or
four. Treat all life with respect. You never know when your
guardian angel might be wearing fur or feathers.
